This can be a bit of a strange topic of conversation (sorry!), but just because you look good on the outside, really doesn’t mean it’s all good on the inside. According to health experts, we all have on average around 20 pounds of digestive waste just sitting in our colon. (I Googled this a lot as there’s NO WAY I could believe that I have the weight of a car tyre trapped in my belly). Gross right!?
Luckily, I’ve found you some simple, natural remedies to detox your digestive system and help to clear out the crap, quite literally!
Detox your digestive system in 8 natural ways.
Drink lots of water.
This seems to be the answer to most health questions but seeing as around 75% of us are dehydrated, it’s certainly a key cause of colon blockage. Around 2.5 litres a day should do it – try setting an alarm on your phone every hour to remind you to fill up a glass.
Do a prune juice cleanse.
There is a reason older people drink prune juice! It keeps you regular and contains a huge amount of fibre. The amount you should drink depends on how blocked up you are, but a small glass with breakfast and another after your evening meal should do the job.
Eat more fibre in general.
Prunes can provide you with loads of fibre to nourish your colon, but there are so many other foods you can try. To up your intake, eat foods such as berries, coconut, avocado, figs and Brussels sprouts.
Squeeze a lemon.
Lemon juice is brilliant for the colon. It’s high in vitamin C and can also boost metabolism which naturally increases your body’s efficiency at getting rid of waste. I start my day with half a lemon squeezed into hot water with a few fresh mint leaves. Yummy!
Start using probiotics.
Probiotics promote healthy bacteria in the gut. These regulate toxic bacteria, which is what can lead to blockages in the digestive tract. To increase the friendly bacteria, eat foods such as yoghurt and dark chocolate.
Add flax seeds to your foods.
Flax seeds are such an easy food to incorporate into your diet as they’re so small, and they can be thrown into absolutely everything. They are high in omega-3 fatty acids which can help to loosen waste. I use them in every smoothie I make.
Do an ACV Cleanse.
Apple cider vinegar contains certain properties that support probiotic growth. Its acidic nature can also help break up years of build up in the colon. To do a cleanse, mix 2 tablespoons of ACV in a glass (around 230ml or 8 ounces) of warm water and add 2 tablespoons of honey to make it taste nicer. Drink this every morning until you feel cleansed, and then just use as and when you feel you need it.
Drink ginger tea.
Ginger is great for raising the temperature of the body. This, in turn, speeds up your digestion. To make a fresh ginger tea, boil a cup of water and add a teaspoon of grated ginger and a pinch of turmeric. Add honey to sweeten if you need to.
I hope that there are some tips in here that you can put into practice ladies. Good luck with shedding some of the excess waste and here’s to feeling lighter and healthier.
