Firstly, let’s be honest here. Do we ever really get it all done? How many times have you completed the list, felt super productive, sat down with a well-deserved cuppa and then thought “bugger” as three more things popped into you head that you really could do with doing today!!
That ‘all’ doesn’t really exist – our lives just don’t work that way. The list is never-ending, and if it’s anything like mine it has scrawls from different pens, pencils, and even wax crayons, as I continue to add to the bottom until finally, I run out of paper.
Does this phrase feel like your mantra?
“I’m busy all day.
I don’t stop, and yet I never seem to get it all done.”
Take a step back lovely lady. Get your pretty head out of the clouds and accept – it doesn’t all get done, ever. So let’s work with what we’ve got and figure out how to make ourselves super productive and get most of it done.
Now, one thing I’ve learned is that a heap of the stuff we think we need to do, we actually don’t! So let’s get ruthless. We want to enjoy our lives too don’t we?
Here’s our plan to achieve super productivity….
- Rule No 1: Have a list of no more than 10 things to do each day. That’s it – just 10. This evening, write down your 3 Most Important Tasks (MITs) for the next day and then underneath you can have up to 7 more. No extras, no ‘oh but I forgot this’. Just 10. Fine – if you do others that’s ok – BUT you can’t beat yourself up about them if they weren’t on your list. Find a gorgeous, beautiful downloadable tick list here. I laminate mine, use dry wipe marker and then can wipe it clean each night.
- Rule No 2: You can’t do any of the 7 tasks until you’ve done the 3 MITs. This seems weird BUT it’s very likely that your MITs are big tasks that you don’t really want to do. So that’s the tip. Do all the rubbishy stuff first. Then weirdly pleasing tasks that take forever like cleaning out your email inbox and unsubscribing from all the junk don’t get pushed into priority position leaving important tasks hanging over you.
- Rule No 3: OK, so there’s times you have to bend the rules. If one of your MITs is to deliver all of your Ebay parcels to the Post Office when you leave work at 4:30 (because you didn’t do it yesterday because it rained and you couldn’t park right outside the day before and now you’ve lied and said that you posted them yesterday) then it’s not realistic to not do anything else all day until you’ve done this.
- Rule No 4: Cross through your tasks when you’ve done. Weirdly this has a better impact on your brain than ticking them – it’s like you’re telling your brain to forget about that one now. It’s done. Hurray!
- Rule No 5: Celebrate when you have done your 3 MITs! Yes, you can do the others but actually know that you’ve achieved what you set out to do today. These were the big tasks hanging over you so congratulate yourself and pour a glass of wine! (Unless you’re at work obviously. Then one of your secret Wispas will have to suffice).
